Overview

This Certification is developed as a guide for both AIT students and preceptors (hereafter referred to as AIT, Administrator in Training) for the NCSLA Certified Administrator Program. The information covers most areas pertinent to Adult Care Home and Family Care Home Management and is intended to prepare AIT Students for certification examination to become a Certified Administrator of an Adult Care Home or an Approved Family Care Home Administrator. It will also assist in the preparation to assume day-to-day management responsibilities of an Adult Care Home or Family Care Home in North Carolina.

Candidates for the program shall comply completely with all the other requirements to become a Certified or Approved Administrator. See requirements listed in G.S. 90 Article 20A (The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Services Regulation, Adult Care Licensure Section will be the agency to issue your license to operate in North Carolina).


This NCSLA Certified Administrator Program shall consist of a minimum of 120 hours meeting the following requirements:

  1. Minimum of 100 contact hours of on the-job-training in a facility setting directly under the supervision of an approved preceptor.
  2. Sixteen hours of online instruction to include the following material: overview of laws, rules, policies and procedures required for facility operations.
  3. A minimum of 5-10 hours of independent work assignments in each chapter of study and area of preceptorship, to be included in the total program hours.

Most participants complete this online program in 4 to 5 weeks. 


The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Services Regulation Adult Care Licensure Section has approved this course of study.

Curriculum Outline

PHASE 1
Learning Objectives for Sixteen Hours of Online Classroom Instruction

  1. To provide an overview of Federal Laws which pertain to Adult Care Home Facilities (i.e., discrimination, wage laws, sexual harassment and ADA.
  2. To provide instruction in cost reporting requirements to enable the AIT Student to successfully report costs.
  3. To provide the student with a conceptual understanding of the Principles of Marketing.
  4. To expose the student to the statutes, which directly affect the operation of an adult care home or family care home, and laws governing the adult care industry.


Phase I consists of sixteen hours of online instruction with a teaching team consisting of experts in each area of instruction.

  • Areas of required law such as, Labor law; Cost reporting, 131-D and EEOC laws
  • Health Care Registry Guidelines, Advanced Directives, TB requirements, Criminal Records Requirements, Death Reporting, Flu and Pneumonia Requirement and Discharge and Transfer Requirements
  • Media & Marketing Concepts
  • An overview of rules and G.S. 108-A-99-111, G.S. 131E-129, Chapter 150B.

PHASE II

Consists of a minimum of 100 hours of internship and/or more as determined by the approved Preceptor. During this time, 3 conference calls with the AIT student, the preceptor and the AIT program provider will also occur established to track the progress of the student and identify any adjustments needed in the work areas.

Licensing Understanding the licensing process, meeting and maintaining licensure standards
Regulatory Management Comprehension of regulations and procedures, where to locate them, regulatory rights and understanding the role of DSS and DHSR
Personnel Staffing requirements, preparing staffing charts, hiring/terminations, training requirements
Environmental/Housekeeping Cleaning, laundry services, building maintenance including AC/Heating, sprinklers, generators, safety
Business/Financial Management Developing best practices for maintaining a financially viable facility, knowledge of the budget process, revenues, financial performance, cost reporting)
Resident Care/Personal Care Marketing, ADL assistance, Clinical policy 3L, Medication Aide duties – administering, ordering/receiving, supervision.
Dietary Inventory, food ordering, food costs, menu planning, cooking
Marketing Strategies for growing your community and building your business, community activities
Activities Scheduling, organizing, facilitating
Other Community events, facility visits, training programs

 

There are work assignments for the internship, which must be completed along with an evaluation.

PHASE III

Consists of credit hours of independent study as outlined by NCSLA.

Upon successful completion of all three parts of the study, the AIT student will receive a certificate validating the completion of the required program.

 

The online instructional program was developed by the NCSLA staff with support from a team of Instructional Designers at UNCG Online.

The online course is offered through SERVE Inc., an affiliated entity of UNC Greensboro.

Instructor/Mentor

All participants in the AIT program will be assigned Instructors/Mentors to help students work through the AIT online course.

Account Access

Participants will receive their username and password along with log in instructions within 24-48 hours after their payment is processed.

Technical Assistance

Technical assistance for the online course offered through MOODLE will provided by Nichole McGill (ntmcgill@uncg.edu).

Refund Policy

Participants who have registered for the AIT program can receive a partial refund if the participant has not viewed any of the program material on the MOODLE site. No refund is available for participants who have accessed or viewed the program material on the MOODLE site.

Please note: Once you begin the modules you cannot get a refund. If applicable, participants can be granted a partial refund of $945 which constitutes the registration fee minus a $50 service charge. No other refunds are offered.
